We're adding a photo of a sheep shearing in this section just so you can share in the delight this sheep experienced. We had the opportunity to do a farm visit to Walter Peak High Country Farm just prior to leaving Queenstown. The farm is accessible to the public via an historic steamship, the Earnslaw which does regular runs on Lake Wakitipu. In order to reach Christchurch, we drove along one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand which took us past Mount Cook and the Southern Alps.
Then, we arrived in Christchurch. Christchurch has a very British atmosphere and the Christchurch Cathedral is a key landmark in the centre of the city. We really enjoyed walking around Christchurch which is known as the "Garden City" of New Zealand and currently has an International Festival of Flowers running.
The music program at the cathedral is incredible and the director of music is Brian Law who came to the cathedral about five years ago from none other than Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. We heard Brian's boys' choir at Evensong on Friday afternoon followed by a rehearsal by the cathedral choir who recently completed a tour of Great Britain. They were incredible. The men were all professional singers or university music students and the boys were all students from the cathedral's grammar school who rehearse every morning at 8:00am.
On Sunday morning, we say goodbye to New Zealand as we catch an early morning flight to Melbourne, Australia where the temperatures today were 38 degrees, Fahrenheit. Ouch! Be sure to check our entries from Australia coming soon!
